WESTMINSTER CLOISTERS: A CENTER FOR CREATIVE SPIRIT PRESENTS

You are invited to participate in Westminster Cloisters’ 4th biennial fine arts show, to be part of this celebration of the gifts of creativity. This year’s show opening theme will celebrate the traditions of Asian art and craft. A portion of the proceeds from the Gala Opening Artists Reception will be donated to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for victims of the Japanese tsunami.
We have organized several special art projects: Printmaking
Prayer Flags combining wood block prints and Haiku, in a collaboration with the Oregon Haiku Society - Paper Lanterns made from your print, and an invitational
Japanese Screen Collaborative will all be created preceding the group show in late February. We encourage artists and non-artists alike to participate in a collaborative
Woodcut Printing Workshop
every Monday night in January, 6-9 pm at Atelier Meridian. (It’s not necessary to make all of the sessions.) Since it is an "Open Studio", you are invited to go beyond January, into February and - who knows... Beginners and beyond are invited to explore the oldest form of printmaking with modern tools and techniques. We’ll cover design transfer methods, safe carving techniques, multiple color techniques and edition printing. Work at your own pace with either birch or shina plywood. Kids from 11-up are invited to cut soft rubber blocks along with their parents. Each class costs $15.00 and includes a small test block, black ink, tracing paper, newsprint & proofing paper. Printing papers and wood blocks available at cost. Quite a few carving tools will be available for use during class, but we highly recommend you bring your own if you want good sharp tools.
You may work independently on your own project, but consider that you are invited to participate in Westminster Cloisters’ 4th biennial fine arts show. This year’s show opening theme will celebrate the traditions of Asian art and craft. A portion of the proceeds from the Gala Opening Artists Reception will be donated to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for victims of the Japanese tsunami.
At the end of the month comes the collaboration: After you have printed your block(s) to your heart's content, you may select a Haiku written and calligraphed by members of The Oregon Haiku Society especially for this project. We will silk screen the haikus (BONUS! Learn silk screening in February!) together with your block on cloth prayer flags and colorful Japanese rice paper to make lanterns. We hope to hang the flags in front of Westminster Presbyterian Church in February, preceding the art show, and the lanterns will be for sale at the Gala Opening Reception. We welcome your participation!
